One World Trust publishes pamphlet on UN Reform
The recent tsunami in Asia has stretched the United Nations to its limit. The
oil-for-food scandal, and the recent attacks on the UN from the US Right
demonstrate potential weaknesses in the UN, highlighting the crucial importance
of reform. The war in Iraq, demonstrations against the WTO and other similar
developments have highlighted a growing lack of trust in international
decision-making institutions. The coming months will be a critical period for
the United Nations if it is to continue as an effective organisation.
To energise the debate about the future of the UN, the Trust has published a
pamphlet on UN reform. The pamphlet, The Reform of the United Nations, seeks to
address two key questions: (1) what changes in the United Nations are necessary
to make it a serious player in today’s world, and (2) what lessons might be
learned from the experience of the circumstances that led to the creation of the
EU?
This pamphlet is the latest in our series called Global Responsibility- Reaching
Beyond National Sovereignty. The series examines the relevance of federalist
ideas to the globalisation debate. We are expecting to publish more pamphlets in
this series over the course of the year, and will be keeping you informed of
developments as they arise.
Additionally, as you may be aware, the UN High Level Panel on Threats,
Challenges and Change has recently published their report, A more secure world:
our shared responsibility. The report contains recommendations on changes that
could be made within the UN system so that it might better address today’s
security challenges. We have produced a summary of the report and are working on
a more thorough analysis that should be ready within the next few weeks. Look
out for it on our website.
The guiding vision for the One World Trust is a world where all peoples live in
peace and security and have equal access to opportunity and participation.
Our projects are achieving incremental changes towards this goal, but we need
your financial support to continue. Why not make a donation now through a secure
web page using a credit/debit card? Other information including details for
paying by cheque can be found here
Thank you for your continuing interest in the work of the Trust.
