Purpose:

Although the United Nations has achieved much since its creation in 1945, changes are necessary to meet the needs of a changed world.

Action for UN Renewal exists to promote an effective United Nations, with the authority and resources required to realise the aims of its founders - international peace, respect for human rights, economic and social justice, and the rule of law.

To this end we explore proposals for the renewal and more effective use of the UN system, primarily by member states but also in partnerships with non-governmental organisations and other civil society groups. Our own Government’s actions are our primary concern.

Aims:

  • To persuade the Government to place the UN at the centre of foreign policy, operating through its agencies and programmes wherever possible, supporting it with adequate funds and personnel.
  • To enhance the Government's participation in the UN system, urging that it is transparent and publicly accountable.
  • To encourage wider knowledge and understanding of the UN Charter, and of proposals for UN Reform, by the general public and particularly in education.
  • To obtain information about current UN activities from all available sources, including UN offices and websites, and to encourage the widest possible exposure and discussion of those activities.

Means to include:

  • Addressing decision-makers, particularly in Government and Parliament.
  • Working with journalists.
  • Working with academics, teachers and other educators.
  • Addressing the public directly, through meetings, articles and leaflets.
  • Co-operating with organisations working for peace, human rights, development, the environment, international law and other issues related to the UN.

We invite individuals and organisations to join us. Together we can make a difference!
